Is Imposter Syndrome Holding You Back? Let's Silence That Voice Together
Hi there, lovely business owner! 💖
Let me ask you something—have you ever felt like a fraud in your own business? That little voice in your head that starts whispering (or sometimes shouting): “Who do you think you are?” “You’re not good enough to be doing this.” Or the one that makes you feel like you’re one mistake away from being found out?
Yeah… I get it. And if I’m being totally honest with you, I’ve been there too. 🙋♀️
It’s that voice of self-doubt, the voice of imposter syndrome, that shows up when we’re pushing ourselves to grow. It creeps in when we’re about to take a big leap—like when I started my business, or when I decided to raise my prices, or even when I launched my first big coaching program. I remember sitting there thinking, “Who am I to do this? What if people think I’m not qualified?”
The struggle is real, my friend. But the good news is, we don’t have to let it hold us back.
So let’s talk about it—and more importantly, let’s talk about how we can silence that voice once and for all.
What is Imposter Syndrome, Anyway?
Imposter syndrome is the feeling that you don’t deserve your success, that you’re somehow “faking it” and that any moment, someone is going to figure out that you’re not as capable as they think you are. It’s that nagging feeling that maybe you’re not “qualified” enough or “experienced” enough to be doing what you’re doing.
I’ve felt that way so many times, especially when I first started coaching. I’d think, “What if I’m not good enough to help others?” Or, “What if people find out I don’t have all the answers?” But here’s the truth I want you to hear: That voice is lying to you.
You are enough. And I’m living proof that you can build the business of your dreams, even when you’re unsure of yourself at times. Because I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be perfect to be successful. Heck, I still don’t have all the answers—but I’ve learned to trust myself, to trust the process, and to trust that my clients are benefiting from the value I bring, even if I’m not “perfect.”
Why Does Imposter Syndrome Show Up?
I remember the first time I made a big business decision—I was terrified. What if I failed? What if I made the wrong move? But, truthfully, imposter syndrome shows up when we’re pushing ourselves to grow. It shows up when we’re stepping outside of our comfort zone and trying something new, whether that’s raising your prices, launching a new product, or even just putting yourself out there in a new way.
And here’s the kicker: It’s actually a sign you’re on the right track. It’s the universe’s way of nudging you toward growth. So, instead of thinking, “Oh no, I’m not ready,” try thinking, “Whoa, I must be onto something if this voice is showing up!”
I remember the first time I launched my coaching program. I was terrified. I asked myself, “What if nobody signs up?” or “What if I’m not good enough to really help them?” But you know what? I launched anyway. And even though it wasn’t perfect, it was exactly what I needed to do to move my business forward.
How to Quiet That Voice of Self-Doubt
Okay, so you’ve got that voice of imposter syndrome in your head right now, and you’re wondering how to shut it down. I hear you. I’ve been there.
Here’s what’s worked for me—and for my clients:
1. Acknowledge the Voice, But Don’t Let It Control You
This might sound weird, but the first step to silencing that voice is actually to acknowledge it. Seriously. Just say, “I hear you, but I’m not listening.” It sounds cheesy, but when you recognise it for what it is—a fear-based thought—you take away its power.
I remember when I first got my first “big” coaching client. I was so nervous about not living up to her expectations. But instead of letting that voice sabotage me, I said, “Okay, I’m nervous, but I’m going to do this anyway.” And guess what? I showed up, and she had the most amazing results.
2. Challenge the Story
That voice loves to tell stories about how you’re not good enough. But guess what? You can change the story. Ask yourself, “Is this really true? Do I have the experience and knowledge to help people?” (Spoiler alert: YES, you do.)
For example, whenever I feel imposter syndrome creeping up, I look at the results I’ve already helped create for my clients. I remind myself of the lives I’ve impacted, the businesses I’ve helped grow. That’s real evidence that I’m doing the right thing.
3. Be Kind to Yourself
Let’s face it: business isn’t a straight path. There are highs and lows, successes and setbacks. Be kind to yourself through it all. I’m guilty of being my own harshest critic, but I’ve learned that showing myself compassion is one of the most important things I can do for my mental and emotional well-being.
4. Surround Yourself with People Who Believe in You
We are not meant to do this alone. Building a business is tough, and trying to do it without support can be downright overwhelming. I’ve been lucky to surround myself with amazing mentors, coaches, and fellow entrepreneurs who remind me of my worth on the days when I forget it. Find your people—they’ll be your biggest cheerleaders.
5. Focus on Your Growth
Every time imposter syndrome pops up, I remind myself that it’s part of the journey. I am growing. If you’re facing self-doubt, it means you’re moving forward, stretching outside of your comfort zone. Embrace it!
